There was a time when I believed resilience was simply about endurance—about pushing through challenges with sheer willpower. I’ve since learned that resilience is not just about surviving the storm; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

I grew up in rural Kansas, where the values of hard work, perseverance, and community were ingrained in every aspect of life. Rural America isn’t just a place—it’s a rhythm, a heartbeat, a living testament to the power of people coming together to lift one another up. These lessons shaped me and became the foundation of my career, leading me to a profound realization: communities thrive when they are empowered.

That understanding drove me to learn about ways I could help my community and achieve my vision of a regional community foundation for northwest Kansas. I knew firsthand that small communities are filled with big dreams, and those dreams deserved resources, leadership, and unwavering belief.

Then, in 2008, I saw an opportunity to take that vision even further. The foundation I had poured my heart into evolved into a regional powerhouse. It was more than just a name change—it was a declaration that rural communities could unite, collaborate, and become stronger together.

The Breaking Point That Built Me

Professional success came with its own rewards, but the battles I fought behind closed doors were far more defining. Behind the smiles I wore in public were bruises no one could see – words that cut, silence that punished, a version of love that made me shrink smaller by the day. My first marriage had unraveled, revealing layers of abuse that I had been too afraid to name.

Later, into my second marriage, infertility weighed heavily on my heart, and self-doubt became a relentless companion. Month after month I sat on the bathroom floor, the test in my hand stark and cruel. Hope had whispered, but once again, reality answered differently. I didn’t cry – just stared. Hollow. Still. Wondering if something inside me was broken beyond repair.

There is a moment in every woman’s life when she stands at the edge of everything she thought she knew—when she must decide whether to stay in the darkness or step into the unknown. It didn’t feel brave. It felt like walking barefoot over glass, bleeding with every step. But somewhere deep inside, a whisper remained: This isn’t the end of your story. So, I stepped forward. I chose to rebuild myself, piece by piece, not as the woman I had once been, but as the woman I was meant to become.

That rebirth gave me a new mission—not just to lead, but to inspire. To show others that even when life feels insurmountable, there is always a way forward.

Discovering Purpose in Leadership

After two decades in the public sector, I transitioned into the private sector, stepping into a leadership role at a small start-up company. It was there that I witnessed something powerful—how organizational culture directly influences success, employee retention, and morale.

It became clear to me that workplaces, much like communities, thrive when they foster belonging, trust, and purpose, and I wanted others to experience the same thing. After 18 months, I took a leap into entrepreneurship, launching my career as a business and leadership coach—a path that allowed me to merge my experiences, insights, and passion for helping others; individuals, companies, and communities, build their own resilience.

The Women Who Inspire Me

Everywhere I turn, I see women carving out spaces of strength and transformation. Women who mentor, educate, and lift others as they climb. From rural America to corporate boardrooms, their voices create ripples that turn into waves of change.

One lesson I have learned from them is this: influence isn’t measured by how loud you are, but by how deeply you impact the lives of others.

I have seen women build businesses from nothing, reinvent industries, and shatter expectations. I have watched them turn their pain into power, and their setbacks into stepping stones. They remind me that leadership is not about prestige, but about the courage to create something meaningful.

A Call to Action: Rising Stronger Together

Looking back, I see now that my journey was never just about me—it was about every person who has ever felt lost, uncertain, or afraid to start over.

Resilience is a choice. Leadership is a responsibility. And community is a force that can shape lives, businesses, and legacies.

If my story has taught me anything, it is this: No matter where you come from, no matter what you’ve endured, you have the power to rise.

So, whether in the heart of rural America or an urban metropolis, let’s build a world where people feel empowered, where businesses foster belonging, and where women continue to lead with authenticity and strength. Because when we rise together, there is nothing we cannot change.
